SUMMARY:QCL Workshop - LaTeX: Equation Writing - Level 1
DESCRIPTION:[QCL Workshop] Equation Writing with LaTeX (Level 1) \nLocation \nRobert Day Sciences Center\, RDSC 107\n681 Claremont Blvd\, Claremont\, CA 91711 \nSummary \nEver wonder how your professor writes mathematical symbols\, equations\, and formulas so easily for your assignments? Ever been frustrated with the limitations and clumsiness of Microsoft’s Equation Editor when writing your lab assignments? Is the technical and aesthetic formatting of your senior thesis driving you crazy? The solution to all these problems is to learn LaTeX\, a document preparation system that makes writing mathematics simple and creates consistent formatting. \nIn this workshop\, we will step through the set-up of getting started with Overleaf to compile your first document. The first half of the workshop will go through the basics of LaTeX and writing math equations so you can start turning in clear solutions to your homework assignments online. The second half delves into formatting and referencing sections\, displaying figures\, using packages\, and citing sources\, enough to produce a professional senior thesis or publishable manuscript. \nParticipants \nOpen to all CMC Staff\, Faculty and Students

SUMMARY:QCL Workshop - R: Exploring Data - Level 2
DESCRIPTION:Location \nRobert Day Sciences Center\, RDSC 107\n681 Claremont Blvd\, Claremont\, CA 91711 \nSummary \n\n\nYou have data and you need a tool to do something with it. Whether you’re a data scientist\, political scientist\, economist\, or biologist\, it’s increasingly apparent that data is ever-present and we need to do a little statistics\, a little visualization\, and a little manipulation of this data. That is precisely what the programming language R is built for. In this workshop\, we will cover the basics of getting started with R and R Studio. \nLearning Objectives: (You will learn how to) \n– Understand the R-Studio environment on the cloud \n– Use the console for basic statistics tools \n– Produce documents with plots of your data findings \nPre-requisites \n– Posit Cloud account; if you don’t have one yet\, please create a new account at https://posit.cloud/ \n– No prior experience with R or any programming is needed. \nParticipants \nAll CMC Students\, Faculty\, and Staff

SUMMARY:QCL Workshop - STATA Bootcamp (Level 1)*
DESCRIPTION:Knowing how to analyze data is increasingly important for success in a wide variety of fields of work and is crucial for doing well in courses on Statistics and Econometrics. It is also at the heart of the work on a majority of senior theses in Economics and related fields. This day-long training session will introduce you to one of the main computer languages that is used for these purposes\, Stata. It will be useful for newcomers as well as those who could use a review.  An emphasis will be placed on the practical steps of using the language. Within one day we will be able to cover all of the main material that you would need for your Statistics and Econometrics classes as well as tacit knowledge and programming tricks that these classes don’t often cover. We will further discuss more advanced techniques that are not needed for these classes but that are often very useful in writing a senior thesis and working after graduation. The tutorial will be useful for getting a head start on your Statistics or Econometrics classes\, increasing your utility in working as a research assistant for a professor\, making it more likely that a professor might hire you as a research assistant\, as a brush up on what you learned in prior courses\, or preparing to write your senior thesis. Jobs such as those for recent college graduates at the Federal Reserve\, World Bank\, International Monetary Fund\, and Washington D.C. think tanks highly value these skills.\n\nThe speaker\, Professor William Lincoln\, teaches Econometrics and the Seminar in Research Methods (Economics 180) for senior thesis writers at CMC.  He has long experience in teaching Stata in these classes as well as working with it for his own published research.  He worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago right out of college doing exactly this type of work.\n\n\nAgenda: Lectures on Stata and work on Stata exercises 9am-12:30pm and 1:30-5pm.  Topics to be covered include\n\n\nThe Stata console \nLogging results\nImporting and merging data\nCleaning data\nInteractive and batch mode programming\nCommon commands\nCommon mistakes\nEstimating correlations and descriptive statistics\nGraphing data\nRegression analysis\nPanel data methods\nLoops \n\n\nLearning Objectives: Learn how to program in Stata\n\nPrerequisite: Local installation or access to Stata through the Remote Desktop Environment \n\n\nParticipants: Upperclass CMC Students priority\n\n\n\nSponsored by Claremont McKenna College’s Randall Lewis Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
