SUMMARY:QCL Workshop - ArcGIS Online: Mapping Data - Level 1
DESCRIPTION:Summary \nGIS (or Geographic Information System) is a computer system that creates\, analyzes\, and displays geographic information and location-based data through maps. Thanks to massive data availability these days\, GIS has become one of the most important tools for data-driven decision making. See some examples of how GIS is used: https://www.esri.com/en-us/what-is-gis/overview. Through this workshop (basics and data exploration)\, you will learn about the basics of ArcGIS and create a special map using its analysis tool. \n  \nTarget Audience \nThis workshop is designed for beginners to GIS. No prior knowledge is needed. \n  \nRequired Software/Account \nArcGIS: To create an ArcGIS online account\, please see this instructions page at https://libguides.libraries.claremont.edu/c.php?g=1171259&p=8555912. Students\, faculty and staff at CMC have free access to a wide variety of Esri GIS products. To learn more about the other tools\, please contact Dr. Jeanine Finn <jeanine.finn@claremont.edu> at the Claremont Library. \n  \nAgenda \n\nWhat is GIS?\nClassic ArcGIS online overview\nBase and Layers\nAnalysis\nEdits\nSave and Send to New ArcGIS Online\nPrint and Share\nEndnotes\n\n  \nPre-requisites \nThis workshop is designed for beginners to GIS. SUMMARY:QCL Workshop - LaTeX: Equation Writing - Level 1
DESCRIPTION:Summary: \nEver wonder how your professor writes mathematical symbols\, equations\, and formulas so easily for your assignments? Ever been frustrated with the limitations and clumsiness of Microsoft’s Equation Editor when writing your lab assignments? Is the technical and aesthetic formatting of your senior thesis driving you crazy? The solution to all these problems is to learn LaTeX\, a document preparation system that makes writing mathematics simple and creates consistent formatting. \nIn this workshop\, we will step through the set-up of getting started with Overleaf to compile your first document. The first half of the workshop will go through the basics of LaTeX and writing math equations so you can start turning in clear solutions to your homework assignments online. The second half delves into formatting and referencing sections\, displaying figures\, using packages\, and citing sources\, enough to produce a professional senior thesis or publishable manuscript. \nPre-requisites: \nThere is no prior experience needed to attend this workshop. \nInstructor: \nDr. Bhaven Mistry \nParticipants: \nAll CMC Students\, Faculty\, and Staff\, and All Claremont Colleges Students\, Faculty\, and Staff.

DESCRIPTION:From Data to Doing\nFeb. 27–28\, 2026\nHarvey Mudd College \nThe DIoDS conference is part of an ambitious initiative at Harvey Mudd College to build a hub for Data Science and Social Impact. This space will be an interdisciplinary center where research\, education and community partnership meet to shape the future of socially responsible data science. This conference is part of our key programming and aims to convene the networks\, conversations and collaborations we hope will characterize our emerging institute. \nThe DIoDS conference will bring together academics\, civic and public leaders\, industry professionals\, community leaders and students to explore how data science can be leveraged responsibly to serve society. Our goal is to transform data-driven insights into meaningful\, equitable and sustainable action. \nPlenary Speakers\n\n\n\nNathan Alexander\, PhD\nAssistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction School of Education and the Center for Applied Data Science and Analytics\, Howard University \n\n\nNathan Alexander\, PhD\, is an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction in the Howard University School of Education and the Center for Applied Data Science and Analytics (CADSA). His research focuses on the history and development of quantitative and mathematical literacy\, and he examines the role of context in probability theory\, statistical data analysis\, and mathematical education. He is the founder and director of the Quantitative Histories Workshop\, a computational curriculum collective and community-centered teaching and learning lab. His research and writing have appeared in the Journal of Humanistic Mathematics\,Notices of the American Mathematical Society\, and PRIMUS: Problems\, Resources\, and Issues in Mathematics Undergraduate Studies.
